Brazil - Pantanal: Chapada dos Guimarães

 

 

All trips on this tour are adjusted to local flora and fauna conditions, depending on aquifer and weather. You will be taken where you can see the most animals and plants. The participants’ physical condition will be considered as well. Additionally, only accommodations that are not flooded at the time will be used during this program (period: end of November/beginning of December through March/April) and therefore there will be many opportunities to observe animals and nature. Many excursions depend on the aquifer and the individual character of the flora and fauna and may be changed individually by the tour guide on site. Primarily, the program is determined by nature, not by man.

 

 

The tours include hikes through the beautiful nature of the Pantanal by foot, on horseback, by boat and partially by car. You will be accompanied by a trained and competent tour guide who is exclusively available to you 24 hours a day.

After a 2-night stay, the accommodations are switched so that you may gain a comprehensive impression of the Pantanal. Plus you cannot trace every animal species within the surroundings of one lodge. All Fazendas and Pousadas have clean rooms equipped with AC/fans and a bathroom/lavatory and, some, with a swimming pool as well. Depending on your booking and needs, a stay in the Table Mountains of Chapada dos Guimarães is possible. The order Pantanal followed by Chapada depends on the local conditions as well as on your arrival and departure time.

 

 

Program example: (7 days/6 nights)

 

Day 1: PANTANAL - Cuiabá - Pousada Piuval

Pick-up at the airport in Cuiabá by your travel guide, followed by a drive of approximately 100 km to Poconé on asphalted roads. Depending on the arrival time, a lunch with a typical Brazilian family in Poconé is planned. Then a 17-km drive to the first accommodation, the Pousada Piuval. You will receive your room. You will have the opportunity to freshen up. In the late afternoon, a short boat tour on the nearby Piuval Lake or a horseback tour are available. After dinner, there will be a night safari to observe nocturnal animals. Followed by an overnight stay in large, nicely arranged rooms with AC, fan, TV, bathroom/shower, and a Frigobar depending on availability).

 

 

Day 2: PANTANAL - Pousada Piuval

Sunrise tour at approximately 5 AM in order to experience the hustle and bustle of the many birds near the lodge before sunrise. The Pantanal awakens and the day begins - an extremely beautiful spectacle of nature. During a hike after breakfast, you will gain a first impression of the multitude of vegetation as well as birds and animals. Now you will have the opportunity to observe, amongst others, nests of the jabiru stork as well as the blue Hyazinthara, and more bird species. There will be a horseback ride after breakfast, which is one of the best opportunities to explore the Pantanal. Departure for the next lodge after lunch.

 

 

Day 2 - 4: PANTANAL - Fazenda Santa Tereza

You will drive to the Santa Tereza on the dirt road Transpantaneira with its many wooden bridges. En-route, there is a chance to see whistling herons (Syrigma sibilatrix), the omnipresent jabiru stork (Jabiru mycteria), toco toucans (Ramphastos toco), great egrets (Casmerodius albus), limpkins (Aramus guarauna) and the great black hawk (Buteogallus urubitinga). In the afternoon, you will go on a horseback tour through the surrounding area of the lodge. After dinner, there will be a night safari to observe nocturnal animals.

You will have to get up early the next day. With a little luck, you can even observe the Paraguay or yellow anaconda (Eunectes notaeus) sunbathing on the Transpantaneira in the early morning hours. Marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus), too, can be seen quite often.

The boat tour on the Fazenda Santa Tereza is always a special highlight. During the tour, you can see all representatives of kingfishers (Chloroceryle/ Ceryle), green-backed herons (Butorides striatus), Trinidad piping-guan (Aburria pipile), snail kite, (Rostrhamus sociabilis) and many more special animals. You will be accompanied by the omnipresent black-collared hawk (Busarellus nigricollis), which is only waiting to nosedive into the water and pull out fish that were thrown away by fishermen.

With a little luck you may even be able to marvel at the very shy giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis) from the boat. Their impressive communication via whistling sounds is an imposing spectacle! At dawn, you may often observe nightjars, such as the pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis) and the common nighthawk (Chordeiles minor). After you finished a boat tour, you will return to the lodge in the late afternoon. Then there will be dinner, and the opportunity to go on an additional night safari.

 

 

Day 4 - 5: PANTANAL - Pousada Rio Claro

After lunch on the 5th day you will leave Fazenda Santa Teresa. Drive along the Transpantaneira to the next Lodge. You can already see many animal and plant types along the Transpantaneira. Short stops will be planned for observation and in order to take photographs. After arrival on the Pousada Rio Claro you can check into your rooms and will have the opportunity to freshen up. Ongoing additional tours are doable depending on your wishes. You can also simply relax by the swimming pool. In the afternoon you will take a boat trip on the river providing the opportunity to observe birds, reptiles, and additional animals that live in, and along, the river. You will also have the opportunity to catch a piranha, with a little bit of luck! Shortly before sunset return to the Lodge and dinner. Another tour can be conducted in the evening, by request, to track down caiman and other nocturnal animals.

 

 

Day 6: PANTANAL - Chapada dos Guimarães

Sunrise tour in order to experience the awakening of the Pantanal. After breakfast we will take a trip to the nearby gallery forest and the Pousada surroundings to observe the flora and fauna in the Pantanal, a riding tour is also possible. After lunch a drive in Chapada dos Guimarães a completely different environment. Watch the sunset from the summit of the plateau, on Cidade de Pedra. Dinner in a local restaurant in town and overnight in the Hotel Turismo or in the Pousada Penhasco, depending on reservations (room with bath, fan, or air-conditioner).

 

 

Day 7: Chapada dos Guimarães - Cuiabá

After breakfast a visit to the National park with its many waterfalls; the biggest, Véu de Noiva, with a height of 96 meters. You will have the opportunity to take a refreshing bath in one of the waterfalls. Return to Cuiabá to the airport. End of the Connection Program (Departure from Cuiabá generally around 4:45 or 5:15 PM).

Please note that a change in the schedule, as well as a change in accommodations, can happen at any time due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances over which we have no control. This decision can also happen on short notice through your local travel agent. Because of this, the above-mentioned accommodations are only described as examples, as changes can occur in the months from December to March.

All accommodations in Pantanal with full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), also in double, 3-bed, and 4-bed rooms with air conditioning, bath/shower, and sometimes swimming pool. Not included in the prices:

Drinks, tips, personal expenses. One-hour sightseeing flight over the Pantanal in a small engine Cessna. Possible overnight hotel stay in Cuiabá in the hotel of your choice. Overnight in Pousada Penhasco against additional charge.
